{"id":873,"date":"2011-03-18T21:46:28","date_gmt":"2011-03-18T11:46:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/denleymusic.com\/wordpress\/?p=873"},"modified":"2011-03-18T21:46:28","modified_gmt":"2011-03-18T11:46:28","slug":"music-appreciation-in-relief-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.denleymusic.com\/musicblog\/music-appreciation-in-relief-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Music Appreciation in Relief Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had typed these up a while ago, but they may come in handy for Relief Society or where needed:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learning new hymns (the Music Chairperson will let you know which lesser known hymns are coming up in Sacrament meeting to revise during Music Appreciation)<\/li>\n<li>Understanding the words of a hymn (reading the hymn aloud and pondering on the words of the hymn and their meaning).<\/li>\n<li>Learning about the composers who wrote the text and\/or music for our hymns.<\/li>\n<li>Listening to classical music<\/li>\n<li>Listening to relaxation tapes to develop a love for music in nature.<\/li>\n<li>Revise favourite hymns but use \u201cIce Cream Lovers Stand\u201d etc. cards to add a spark!<\/li>\n<li>Introduce an instrument \u2013 invite a ward member to demonstrate an instrument they play.<\/li>\n<li>Teach music theory (i.e. what a bass clef\/treble clef is, or what the notes are using rhymes \u2013 \u201cSpaces are FACE\u2019s\u201d for the notes in spaces in the treble clef.<\/li>\n<li>Award \u2018super singer\u2019 awards occasionally, like they do in Primary to encourage Sisters to sing.<\/li>\n<li>Schedule musical items \u2013 ask Sisters to provide a musical item for Musical Appreciation (allow enough time for them to practice)<\/li>\n<li>Learn sign language to songs\/hymns.<\/li>\n<li>Learn musical items for sacrament meeting if \u2018Relief Society\u2019 is asked to sing an item.<\/li>\n<li>Listen to music from other cultures.<\/li>\n<li>Learn about medieval instruments.<\/li>\n<li>Sing along to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.\u00a0 Speak about the Choirs of Angels mentioned in the Scriptures and then invite the Sisters to sing along to a recording of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.<\/li>\n<li>Play different types of music and ask how this makes the Sisters feel (bearing in mind that it is still Sunday).<\/li>\n<li>Do movement to music.\u00a0 Kids will especially love to do this with Mum at home.<\/li>\n<li>Discuss Music in the Home.\u00a0 The home is the first place children learn to appreciate music.\u00a0 Keeps Mum calm.\u00a0 Makes chores seem easier when listening to music.\u00a0 Helps those working outside the home relax after a stressful day (and those working in the home too).<\/li>\n<li>Teach rhythm.\u00a0 Have three or four different rhythms being clapped\/tapped again each other.\u00a0 Try it at different tempos.<\/li>\n<li>Learn about different percussion instruments.\u00a0 Make your own shakers out of toilet rolls.\u00a0 Fill with rice or dried lentils and seal the ends.\u00a0 Make a rain stick.\u00a0 Fill plastic soft drink bottles with dried lentils or rice.<\/li>\n<li>Have the Sisters sing along to the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel\u2019s \u2018Messiah\u2019.\u00a0 This should prove to be interesting!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had typed these up a while ago, but they may come in handy for Relief Society or where needed:- Learning new hymns (the Music Chairperson will let you know which lesser known hymns are coming up in Sacrament meeting to revise during Music Appreciation) Understanding the words of a hymn (reading the hymn aloud [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[34],"tags":[148],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.denleymusic.com\/musicblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/873"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.denleymusic.com\/musicblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.denleymusic.com\/musicblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.denleymusic.com\/musicblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.denleymusic.com\/musicblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=873"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.denleymusic.com\/musicblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/873\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.denleymusic.com\/musicblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=873"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.denleymusic.com\/musicblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=873"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.denleymusic.com\/musicblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=873"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
